Serampore Exhibition
Serampore Exhibition from 16th September until 30th September.
On Friday 16th September, the Danish Ambassador to India, H.E. Freddy Svane, inaugurated ‘Serampore of History and Heritage’ exhibition hosted by Ganges Art Gallery.
The exhibit holds stories from the Danish East India Company times in Serampore (1616- 1650 & 1670 – 1792) and how it has effected Serampore, and the heritage which can still be traced till today.
One of the parts of the exhibit covers the St. Olav church, build by Danes from 1800 – 1826, was restored to its former glory in 2016, and won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The Danish Ministry of Culture, Realdania foundation, National Museum of Denmark, Serampore College and Calcutta Diocesan Trust Association, sponsored the conservation of the church.
H.E. Freddy Svane found the exhibit beautiful and enlightening. The exhibit shows how integrating old colonial buildings into the lives of the locals can be fruitful. Ambassador Svane states that he finds this especially successful in Serampore and it shows the possibilities to go “from history to heritage to hope”. The Danish Tavern have been restored to its original purpose of a hotel, accommodating guest, creating jobs for the locals and generating growth in Serampore today. According to him, this is the best result of Danish heritage in India.
‘Serampore of History and Heritage’ is supported by The Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi.
