G20 and India-Denmark relations
With the theme of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ - ‘One Earth One Family One Future’, India assumed the Presidency of the G20, last year on 1st December 2022. It is a historic moment for India, as India holds the G20 Presidency for the first time ever.
India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has made clear that India’s G20 Presidency shows a new path towards more human-centric and inclusive development. The presidency has provided an opportunity for the Indian people to be a vital part of various public engagements, as around 200 meetings were held across India in over 50 cities. The G20 delegates experienced India’s diverse cultural legacy and unique heritage.
The G20 Summit took place on 9th and 10TH September 2023 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, where the leaders of G20 countries gathered. The summit reached consensus in the form of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, with the Indian presidency managing to bridge difficult gaps. The African Union became a permanent member of G20 during the summit.
The Indian G20 Presidency has underscored the many shared priorities between India and Denmark. For the first time ever in the history of G20, Denmark was invited by India to participate in two G20 working groups - Climate & Environmental Sustainability and Energy Transitions respectively.
Leading up to the G20, Mr. Dan Jørgensen, Danish Minister for Development, Cooperation and Global Climate policy, participated in the two ministerial meetings in Chennai and Goa, as Denmark assumed the role of a partner, providing knowledge and recommendations not least for meaningful global climate action. This will further strengthen Indo-Danish cooperation as part of the bilateral Green Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark.
It is heartening to see that India’s presidency worked for both Indians and the world. The presidency has underlined the importance of cooperation and international solidarity as the world is facing multiple global challenges and crises.
