Baltic Sea Energy Security Summit
On 30th August, 2022, the Baltic Sea Energy Security Summit was held at Denmark. The Summit brought together, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister of Latvia Krišjānis Kariņš, Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas, and Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin. The aim of the Summit was to harness the Baltic Sea’s untapped offshore energy potential.
The Baltic region is 10x times the size of Denmark but has great potential for sustainable energy projects and activities. The Baltic sea offers excellent wind conditions and shallow waters.
Denmark and the other participant countries signed a declaration on 30th August that aim to rapidly expand their offshore wind power capacity. The plan is to have 19.6 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, which means a huge increase compared to the current 2.8 GW.
The Summit was an important step towards strengthening the security cooperation in the Baltic Sea.
