Indian-Danish Water Summit 2022

Water plays a key role in Indo-Danish relationship. Enhancing the ‘Green Strategic Partnership’ between both the countries, the Indian-Danish Water Summit was held from 13th _ 15th June 2022, in New Delhi and Chennai. The theme of the Summit was ‘Water as a common good: Challenges and Constraints’. The Summit was joined by many important guests which included Ms. Lea Wermelin, Danish Minister for Environment, Mr. Vikas Sheel, Mission Director of National Jal Jeevan Mission, Ms. D. Thara, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and stakeholders from both the sides.

During the inauguration of the Summit, Ms. Lea Wermelin, Danish Minister of Environment said, "Denmark has become a super hero in the water field" and collaboration is the key to develop our water sector. We believe that the Indian scale and the Danish technology is the right framework for shaping the field. Let the partnerships and solutions from this Summit inspire the rest of the world to take care of our precious water resources’’.

Danish Ambassador to India, H.E. Freddy Svane, said, “The Indian-Danish Water Summit is focused on the water resources, whether as pristine groundwater, surface water or potentially treated wastewater. By bringing together key stakeholders from both countries, we were able to see how to leverage Danish technology and expertise and help scale it in India as well as secure water for millions’’. Mr. Vikas Sheel, Mission Director of National Jal Jeevan Mission, during his address said, “If we have the water, we intend to use more water, with the help of Danish experiences’’.

The main aim of the Summit was to enhance the cooperation between Indo-Danish water sector and to create partnerships to assist each other in improving the availability of 24/7 water supply with strictly controlled distribution systems and to improve wastewater treatment. This will help India reaching its targets for fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goal 6.
