Peter Taksøe-Jensen is the ambassador at the Danish Embassy in New Delhi.
Denmark has been in India since Danish trading ships reached the shores of Tamil Nadu and established a trading station at Tharangambadi four centuries ago. Since then and throughout history, our relationship has been marked by peace, friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation.
India will soon become the most populous nation on the earth. And at a time when many markets are slowing down, India is emerging as the world’s fastest-growing major economy with a GDP that is expected to grow above 7.5 % this and next year.
Many things indicate that India is entering what could possibly become a longer – and to a large extent self-driven - economic upturn.
While it has already peaked in the US, Europe, Japan and elsewhere, the working age proportion of India’s population will increase in the coming decades. Add to this the increasing educational level of the Indian workforce and better health standards, including the recent eradication of polio and other severe diseases. Today, highly skilled young Indians contribute to the competitiveness of Indian and foreign companies alike thereby paving the way for India’s swift integration into global value chains.
In fact, many major Danish companies are already dipping into India’s talent pool and thereby strengthening their global competitiveness. By placing even highly value adding activities like engineering and design activities in India, these companies have been able to increase employment in Denmark as well.
As Denmark’s Ambassador to India, I will endeavour to develop the great cooperation potential in areas like Smart Cities, research, clean energy, water solutions, health and food production to mention but a few.
We are already doing a lot, but there are so many more things that our nations can do together.
