12.02.2020  07:36

The second Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on the maritime sector between India and Denmark held on 04th February 2020 in New Delhi at the Ministry of Shipping, Govt. of India.
India continues to be an important partner for Denmark and the Danish maritime industry. The annual meetings of the JWG are important milestones in the maritime cooperation between Denmark and India, and they are a great opportunity to continue the relation building and discuss key maritime issues of mutual interest.

The new Danish government is dedicated to addressing climate change. To this end, the Danish government has formed 13 climate partnerships with key industries including the Danish maritime industry. In the coming years a key priority for the Danish Government will be to support the green transformation of the maritime industry, in Denmark and globally, to speed up the decarbonisation of global shipping. It was quite interesting to hear the perspectives and plans of the Indian Government and the Indian maritime industry during the discussions.

The purpose of the JWG meeting was to discuss the state-of-affairs in maritime cooperation between India and Denmark, and to identify opportunities for closer collaboration between our two countries. In this regard, five topics namely green shipping, shipbuilding and recycling, maritime digitalization, training and education, maritime security, etc. for potential interest as identified and discussed in detail to enhance the strategic cooperation. The relevant stakeholders from universities, institutes, research organizations, etc. from both sides participated to discuss the opportunities of collaboration and partnerships.

This high-level dialogue is an opportunity to set the direction for the cooperation and keep up the momentum. However, it is vital that this cooperation is not only about dialogue but to make sure that the dialogue translates into concrete action and activities that have a visible, positive impact on the maritime industries in India and Denmark. Both sides agreed to develop a work plan for 2020-2021 reflecting the interests of the Danish and Indian maritime industry and focusing on activities that add value to companies, universities and research organisations in two countries.

Finally, Danish side invited the Indian stakeholders to Denmark for the next JWG meeting in early 2021 and thanked the Indian side for hosting this valuable meeting and constructive participation of all the stakeholders.
