Strategic Sector Cooperation on Sustainable Urban Water Management between the City of Udaipur and the City of Aarhus

A Joint Project on Sustainable Urban Water Management essentially contributes toward the improvement of urban water management. Given Danish expertise in this field, a Joint Project on Sustainable Urban Water Management is implemented by the City of Aarhus, Denmark and the City of Udaipur, India from August 2017 to June 2021. The project is funded by the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The expected outcomes of the cooperation is  enhanced liveability through sustainable development; improved water quality by reduced proportion of untreated water; improved drinking water services and water quality, increased water-use efficiency and enhanced integrated water management; and local and global city partnerships on sustainable cities and urban water management established.

The City of Arhus and the City of Udaipur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Urban Water Management presently upto December 2022. The objective of the cooperation is to create more sustainable and smart cities. The Joint Project is implemented within the framework of the MoU.

The project is expected to contribute not only toward the activities of City of Udaipur and Udaipur Smart City Limited (USCL) but also to the Green Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark and in particular to the United Nations' (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities and UN SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation.

Example: City of Udaipur and City of Aarhus has worked on model project on a Green-Blue Riverscape describing a stretch of the Ayad River with recommendations on sustainable, nature based solutions for transforming the riverscape into an attractive asset contributing positively to city development.
