Danish Film Festival

Danish Film Festival at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

August 8 to 16, 2017

Everyone is invited to experience the best of contemporary Danish cinema at the India Habitat Centre, when the Royal Danish Embassy in collaboration with the Danish Film Institute and Habitat Film Club presents the Danish Film Festival in New Delhi from August 8 to 16.

Despite being a small country, Danish film and film artists have gained international attention and won a number of awards at the world’s most prestigious film festivals and award ceremonies, including five nominations and one win at the Academy Awards within the last ten years.

“During the last couple of decades, Denmark has put itself on the world map of cinema with innovative directors such as Lars von Trier, Susanne Bier and Thomas Vinterberg and star actors such as Mads Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Sidse Babett Knudsen,” says Ambassador of Denmark to India,

Mr. Peter Taksøe-Jensen. “I am thrilled that the people of Delhi now get the opportunity to experience what makes Danish film so special.”

Announcing the Danish Film Festival, Ms.Vidyun M. Singh, Director Programmes, India Habitat Centre, remarked that the Danish Film Package is going to be a refreshing treat for habitat film club members and film enthusiasts of the city.  “Danish Filmmakers have carved out a niche coming out with stunning cinema, most notably since the last decade, and I am sure this festival featuring deeply moving titles such as The Hunt, Key House Mirror, Man Falling among others, will take Danish cinema to newer audiences. We look forward to that.”

The festival opens with the heart-felt drama ‘Key House Mirror’ directed by one of Danish film’s biggest young talents, Michael Noer, and starring the legendary Ghita Nørby, whose career in Danish theatre and film over six decades has earned her a number of awards and recognition as one of Denmark’s most prominent actresses.

Saturday night, audiences can experience one of the biggest critical successes of recent Danish cinema with Thomas Vinterberg’s Oscar-nominated film ‘The Hunt’. The film stars Mads Mikkelsen who won the award for best actor at Cannes Film Festival for his role in the film as Lucas, a kindergarten teacher, who becomes the target of mass hysteria after being wrongly accused of sexually abusing a child in his kindergarten class.

The festival will also feature documentaries including ‘Bugs’ by Andreas Johnsen in which two chefs travel throughout the world tasting insects in an effort to determine their sustainability as a food source.

Closing the festival is Nitesh Anjaan’s personal Indo-Danish story about his own father in ‘Far from home’. Nitesh sets out on a filmmaking journey to understand his mysterious father and his irrevocable decision to give up his Danish residence permit and move back to India to start a new life after 39 years in Denmark.
