Danish conductor performs at historic Royal Opera House in Mumbai

On 27 July the opera ‘The secret wedding’ premieres at The Royal Opera House in Mumbai – the first full length opera production at the historic Opera House since its reopening in 2016. Conducting the performance is Maria Badstue, who has been called one of the best young Danish conductors of today.

Maria Badstue was born in Mumbai before she was adopted to Denmark at the age of five months. For the first time since then she is back in India to conduct a cast of Indian singers and members of The Symphony Orchestra of India for four performances of ‘The Secret Wedding’ by Domenico Cimarosa.

Maria Badstue studied orchestral conducting at the conservatory in Oslo, and has performed with orchestras across Europe since becoming a prize winner at the prestigious Lovro von Matatic competition in 2011. The upcoming performance at the historic Royal Opera House in Mumbai will be her debut in Asia.

The Opera House was inaugurated by King George V in 1911, but was closed again in 1993. In 2008 restoration work began to bring the historic building back to former glory, and last year it reopened after being closed for 23 years.
